Job Hours: Typically 7:00 am - 3:30 pm depending on assignment
Salary: $10.68 – $14.32/hour. Typically, step 1 of Grade A11, depending on qualifications.
 Temporary/Seasonal position represented by AFSCME. Includes vacation and sick leave in accordance with the union contract. These positions are limited to 520 hours per year.
Description:  
       The City of Springfield is now accepting applications for our Seasonal Maintenance Workers. This recruitment will be used to staff multiple spring/summer crews with various start dates throughout the season.

This is an opportunity to work with our Development & Public Works - Operations division and learn more about our organization. We are looking for candidates who are familiar with or willing to learn tasks that occur in maintaining City infrastructure, specifically in landscape maintenance and surface drainage programs. Position Overview:
Under the supervision of an Operations Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker performs entry level seasonal work to maintain stormwater water quality facilities, City trees, planter beds, turfgrass and other landscaped areas; may use herbicides for vegetation control. Performs related duties as assigned.

Summary of Essential Duties:
• Participate in shrub and tree planting.
• May assist in irrigation line repairs and sprinkler head replacements.
• Maintains shrubs and planter beds by trimming and weeding.
• May provide assistance to the tree trimming crew by trimming trees and chipping branches.
• Implement vegetation control using weed eaters.
• Mow turfgrass with push mowers.
• Maintain stormwater water quality facilities.
• Provide written and oral reports as required.

Education & Experience:
Familiarity with maintaining landscape or stormwater facilities, or ability to learn, and in the operation of light power equipment and performing related skills or semi-skilled tasks.

Any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education and experience may be considered qualifying.

Other Requirements:
• Employees must be at least 18 years of age to meet Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry standards for operating equipment.
• Valid Oregon Driver’s license at time of appointment.
• Must provide current Certified Court Print driving record if invited for interview.

General Knowledge & Demonstrated Skills:
• Knowledge of basic laborer procedures and work activities to include the use of hand tools and equipment;
• Knowledge of value of team efforts;
• Ability to identify or learn to identify native and/or invasive plant species;
• Ability to carry out written and oral instructions;
• Ability to document work activities and provide basic written reports;
• Ability to maintain positive working relations with co-workers and the general public;
• Ability to work safely in a hazardous, fast-paced, outdoor environment;
• Ability to learn the techniques and methods involved in maintenance and construction of the City's public works facilities.

Physical Requirements: Medium work – Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
