PLEASE NOTE: There are applicant testings for this position (see below in 'Testing & Selection Process').  Applicants invited to test will be emailed directly with additional information.  Please reserve the dates listed, in the event you are invited to test.

In order to prevent unnecessary time spent in applying for this position, the following elements will disqualify you for this position.  Therefore, you will not be considered for this position if any of the following applies:
•You do not have a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate from an accredited school.
•You are not a United States Citizen, nor can become a citizen within 18 months.
•You are not, or will not be, 21 years of age or older by time of appointment.
•You do not have, or cannot get, a valid Oregon Driver's license by time of appointment.
•You have a felony conviction.
•You cannot refrain from the use of tobacco products while on duty.
•You are unable to afford the cost of this academy program which is approximately $600.00.

(Upon completion of academy and six months of reserving, the Police Department will reimburse the academy program cost.)

Position Overview:
Under the supervision of a field training officer, regular Police Officer or Sergeant, the Police Reserve Officer participates in a wide range of law enforcement and community policing activities.

Reserve Officers enforce state and local laws, and respond to emergencies in an effort to protect life and property. Included among the duties the Reserve Officer responds to are life threatening emergencies, investigates crimes, performs community relations and crime prevention functions as well as prepares written and/or typed reports of activities.

The Springfield Reserve Officer Program is an opportunity for people to become involved in both their community and law enforcement.  A Reserve Officer is a volunteer position that is not compensated.  However, it is great experience and training for those who are interested or curious about a career in law enforcement and a wonderful opportunity for those who want to help make a difference in their community through assisting in law enforcement avenues.

Reserve officers receive the same training as full-time officers and work alongside them in every aspect of Department operations.  The Springfield Reserve Officer program is designed to allow your success through training; enabling you to become a valuable resource and asset in assisting the full time patrol officers working on the street every day.

The Springfield Police Department provides all required uniforms, equipment (flashlight, web gear, holster, etc.) and a firearm.  You are responsible for your own footwear and any additional approved equipment you see fit to need for duty not provided by the department.

You must be 21 years of age by time of appointment; be a U.S. citizen or become one within 18 months; have a valid driver’s license; and, have a high school diploma or GED certificate.  You must be free of any felony convictions or domestic violence convictions and be drug free.  You will be required to pass the following steps to successfully become eligible as a Reserve Police Officer candidate:

  • Complete an application
  • Written exam
  • Physical Agility Test
  • Oral Board examination
  • Background interview and investigation
  • Medical examination including drug screening
  • Psychological examination
  • Psychological interview
  • Chief’s interview

If you successfully pass these requirements and are offered a position with the Springfield Police Reserve Officer program, you are also required to attend and pass an approved Reserve Police Academy. You will be responsible for the cost of this academy program which is approximately $600.00. However, upon completion of academy and six months of reserving, the Police Department will reimburse the academy program cost.

The Springfield Police Department is also seeking qualified Reserve Police Officers for lateral entry into its Police Reserve program.  Lateral Reserve Officers will not have to attend another academy, only orientation type training to become familiar with department policies and procedures.  Applicants must have graduated from an Oregon State approved academy.  Candidates will be required to successfully complete the same processing criteria which is required for all Springfield Police Reserve Officers.

Testing & Selection Process:
Before proceeding with application, please review the 'Oregon Physical Abilities (ORPAT)' document found below.

Aptitude, personality profile, mental and physical fitness, and communication skills will all be evaluated.

The timelines for testing notifications are very short. Please plan accordingly.

Written and Physical Ability testing is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 14, 2018. Applicants will be contacted via email with additional testing details. All applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $15.00 at the time of the written exam to cover testing and scoring costs. You will also be required to show picture identification at the time of the written exam.

Please note that there is a study guide available for the written test.  Please work directly with the test provider to obtain the materials: IPMA-HR (Entry-level Police Officer Candidate Study Guide). 

The physical test will consist of the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT).  Please review the 'ORPAT' document below to learn more about the physical ability testing portion.

Previous ORPAT scores will NOT be accepted.

Oral Boards:
Oral Boards for applicants who successfully pass written and physical testing will happen shortly after the written and physical ability testing (date: to be determined)Finalists will be notified individually to schedule interview times.
