The City of Springfield has exciting opportunities in our Police Department for experienced Lateral Police Officers. The Springfield Police Department is dedicated to providing the best available law enforcement and accountability services to our community.  This includes our 100 bed Municipal Jail located in our Justice Center- the largest municipal jail in the State of Oregon.  Because of this tremendous resource, Springfield does not have a capacity-based release program.

Education & Experience:
We are interested in finding police officers who have relevant experience in a municipal, county, or state police agency. Those who are currently certified as police officers in Oregon, or able to obtain Oregon DPSST certification if a police officer in another state, are eligible to apply for the lateral police officer position.  Military police, federal officer, reserve officer, security officer and corrections experience do not meet the requirement for relevant experience.

*Please note that the Springfield Police Department has a personal appearance policy, which includes but is not limited to:  No visible tattoos are allowed while on-duty; no body piercing (some exceptions for ear piercings), hair must be neat and not pose any safety issues, "alterations" to any area of the body that is not concealed by authorized uniform or attire.  If you have specific questions about the personal appearance policy, please email HR@springfield-or.gov

Skills & Abilities:
Under the supervision of a Sergeant this position enforces state and local laws, and responds to emergencies in an effort to protect life and property. Police Officer duties include responding to life threatening emergencies, investigating crimes, performing community relations and crime prevention functions as well as preparing written and/or typed reports of activities.

Successful lateral candidates will be offered a pay step commensurate with their related experience (or equivalency) as reviewed by the Springfield Police Department according to the following guidelines:
•Pay step 2: $30.36/hour, 3-5 years experience
•Pay step 3: $31.88/ hour, 5-7 years of experience
•Pay step 4: $33.48/ hour, 7-10 years of experience
•Pay step 5: $35.14/ hour, 10+ years of experience

Additional Premium pays:
•DPSST Intermediate: 5%
•DPSST Advanced: 10%
•Bachelor's Degree: 5%
•Foreign Language Fluency: 2.5%

Testing & Selection Process:
Candidates considered for the Lateral Police Officer position will be identified through a series of screening tools and tests including an Employment Application, Qualifying Questionnaire (part of the application), Physical Ability Test, Psychological Exam, Comprehensive Background, Medical Examination to include drug screening for controlled substances, and Oral Interviews.  All testing and selection processes will be done in accordance with the Oregon Veterans' Preference in Public Employment Law.

Aptitude, personality profile, mental and physical fitness, and communication skills will all be evaluated.

Physical Ability testing is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, July 14, 2018. If you are invited to this stage in the recruitment process, you must be present.  Applicants invited to test will be emailed directly with additional information.

The physical test will consist of the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT).  Please review the 'ORPAT' document below to learn more about the physical ability testing portion. 

Previous ORPAT scores will NOT be accepted.

***Please note, Lateral Police Officers (those already DPSST certified in Oregon or another state) will not be required to complete the written test- only the ORPAT will be required. 

Oral Boards for applicants who successfully pass physical testing are tentatively scheduled for Sunday-Monday, July 15 and 16, 2018.
