Please note that this recruitment will require written and physical testing. Tentatively, the written test and the ORPAT are scheduled for Saturday, July 21, 2018. Please reserve this date, in the event you are invited to test. All testing and selection processes will be done in accordance with the Oregon Veterans' Preference in Public Employment Law.
In order to prevent unnecessary time spent in applying for this position, the following elements will disqualify you for this position. Therefore, you will not be considered for this position if any of the following applies:
- You are not a female.
- You are not a United States Citizen, or cannot become a Citizen in less than one year.
- You are not 21 years of age, or you will not be 21 years of age by time of appointment.
- You have not earned a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate from an accredited school.
- You do not have a valid Oregon Driver's license, or can't obtain a valid Oregon Driver's license by time of appointment.
- You have any felony convictions.
- You can't refrain from using tobacco products while on duty.
- You are unable to work rotating shifts and assignments; unable to report for duty at any time an emergency arises; or unable to work overtime with little or no notice.
Under the supervision of a Detention Supervisor, controls, directs, and monitors inmates within the Springfield Municipal Jail, and when escorting inmates off institution or facility grounds.
Application, Testing and Selection Process:
The department is establishing an eligibility list from which it will choose candidates for consideration as Detention Officers. The eligibility list will be established by a series of screening tools and tests, to include an Employment Application, Qualifying Questionnaire, Written Test, Physical Ability Test, Psychological Exam, Comprehensive Background Investigation, Medical Examination to include drug screening for controlled substances, and Oral Interviews.
Aptitude, personality profile, mental and physical fitness, and communication skills will all be evaluated.
Education and Experience:
We are interested in finding applicants who have the education and experience necessary to be successful as a Detention Officer for the City of Springfield. The educational requirement is two years college education, or any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience or training. We invite you to consider how your experience can be transferred to meet the requirements for the Detention Officer position. We are looking for applicants with any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the duties of this position.
•Ability to learn and apply principles of municipal jail operations
•Skill in meeting with and dealing with a wide range of people
•Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and to present findings in an objective and professional manner
•Ability to effectively deal with behavior and adjustment problems of adult offenders
•Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
•Ability to maintain complete and accurate records
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and clients
•Ability to make decisions in accordance with established police and procedures
•Ability to use initiative and good judgment in completing tasks and responsibilities
Required Special Qualifications:
•DPSST Certification as a Corrections Officer or successful completion of the State of Oregon DPSST Corrections Officer Certification within twelve (12) months from the date of appointment.
•United States citizenship, or obtain citizenship in less than one year
•21 years of age or older by time of appointment
•Earned a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate from an accredited school
•Must have no felony convictions that could have resulted in a sentence to a federal or state penitentiary
•Must meet minimum physical and psychological requirements as determined by a physician.
•A valid State of Oregon Driver's license at the time of appointment, or have a valid Driver's license from another state that allows you to drive in Oregon while you obtain an Oregon Driver's license (see Oregon DMV rules)
•Must refrain from the use of tobacco products on duty
*Please note that the Springfield Police Department has a personal appearance policy, which includes but is not limited to: No visible tattoos are allowed while on-duty; no body piercing (some exceptions for ear piercings), hair must be neat and not pose any safety issues, "alterations" to any area of the body that is not concealed by authorized uniform or attire. Written testing and physical testing is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 21, 2018. Applicants selected to test will be contacted via email with additional testing details. Please be sure we have a valid email address so that we may contact you with information. All applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $15.00 at the time of the written exam, to cover testing and scoring costs. You will also be required to show picture identification at the time of the written exam.
The physical test will consist of the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT). Review the 'ORPAT' document:
Oral Boards (Interviews) will be held for applicants who successfully pass written and physical testing. Tentatively, Oral boards will be scheduled for Sunday and Monday, July 22 and 23, 2018.
ORPAT PRACTICE SESSION
There will be a practice session for female applicants on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 3pm. The session will be located at Agnes Stewart Middle School (900 S. 32nd St., Springfield). For those candidates who pass the ORPAT during the practice session, we will accept these ORPAT scores in lieu of testing on July 21st (assuming the candidate meets the minimum job qualifications and passes the written test).
