Position Overview:
Springfield Police Officers are committed to professionalism while enforcing state laws, local laws, and municipal codes.  When wearing a badge, Officers represent not only themselves but the department and the community in which they serve.  Police Officers respond to emergencies in an effort to protect life and property, and make an immediate and positive impact.  The ideal Police Officer candidate will have a passion for service while performing preventative community policing for culturally diverse neighborhoods.

Springfield Police Officer Minimum Requirements:
•  High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate from an accredited school
•  United States citizen, or obtain citizenship within 18 months of appointment
•  21 years of age by time of appointment
•  Valid Oregon Driver’s License by time of appointment
•  No felony convictions
•  Refrain from tobacco products while on duty
•  Ability to pass a background investigation
•  Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
•  Ability to meet physical, medical and psychological requirements for the position (see Oregon Administrative Rule 259-008-0010 Minimum Standards for Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer:  www.oregon.gov/DPSST)

The Springfield Police Department has a personal appearance policy, which includes but is not limited to:  No visible tattoos are allowed while on-duty; no body piercing (some exceptions for ear piercings), hair must be neat and not pose any safety issues, "alterations" to any area of the body that is not concealed by authorized uniform or attire.  If you have specific questions about the personal appearance policy, please email HR@springfield-or.gov

Testing & Selection Process:
Candidates considered for the Police Officer position will be identified through a series of screening tools and tests including an Employment Application, Qualifying Questionnaire, Written Test, Physical Ability Test, Psychological Exam, Comprehensive Background, Medical Examination to include drug screening for controlled substances, and Oral Interviews.  Aptitude, personality profile, mental and physical fitness, and communication skills will all be evaluated.  All testing and selection processes will be done in accordance with the Oregon Veterans' Preference in Public Employment Law.

The timelines for testing notifications are very short. Please plan accordingly.

Written and Physical Ability testing is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 8, 2018. Applicants will be contacted via email with additional testing details. All applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $15.00 at the time of the written exam to cover testing and scoring costs. You will also be required to show picture identification at the time of the written exam. *This is the only date and location that the written and physical testing will occur.  If you are invited to this stage in the recruitment process, you must be present.

Please note that there is a study guide available for the written test.  Please work directly with the test provider to obtain the materials: IPMA-HR (Entry-level Police Officer Candidate Study Guide).

The physical test will consist of the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT).  Please review the 'ORPAT' document below to learn more about the physical ability testing portion.

Previous ORPAT scores from other agencies will NOT be accepted.

Oral Boards (Interviews) for applicants who successfully pass the written and physical testing are tentatively scheduled for Sunday and Monday, December 9 and 10, 2018.

*For those candidates who complete the oral board, but who are not subsequently hired, you may be considered for the Reserve Officer position.  This is strictly voluntary on the candidate's part, and will not hinder any future employment opportunities with the Springfield Police Department.  This is merely an opportunity for candidates to build experience for future employment options, if they choose to do so.
