       Position Overview:
The City of Springfield Development and Public Works Department is announcing an immediate opening for a Maintenance Technician Apprentice. The Operations Division is known for excellent employees and exceptional quality of work. The Maintenance Technician Apprentice is the entry level class in a State accredited apprenticeship program which entails completion of a 3-year apprenticeship followed by journey classification. Employees in this classification perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks to maintain City streets, sanitary sewer systems, surface and subsurface storm drainage systems, street signs and surface markings, City buildings, equipment, and landscaped areas. Employees in this classification take pride in being directly responsible for maintaining the positive image that the City projects to the community through our facilities and infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to work within established guidelines and follow directions, but will also be able to identify potential problems and offer solutions. Working well in a team environment to produce quality work is a must. Ideally, this person will be interested in building a long-term career with the City of Springfield as they develop through the apprenticeship program.

Selection Process:
The selection process will include: interviews, reference checks, background investigation; as well as, post-offer (conditional offer) medical certification, drug and alcohol screening, and physical abilities test.

Qualifications for Position:
•  High School Diploma or GED
•  Must be 18 years old or older
•  Valid Oregon Driver’s license at time of appointment
•  Oregon Commercial Learner's Permit must be obtained within 6 months of appointment
•  Oregon Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B and endorsements must be obtained within one year of appointment

Candidates do not need to have prior experience in the field of maintenance, operations or public works.  Should candidates have prior experience, preferences may be given for:
•  Data entry
•  Previous use of equipment, all types big and small
•  Previous government experience in maintenance, operations, or public works
•  Spanish speaking proficiency

Any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education and experience may be considered qualifying.

Summary of Essential Duties:
•  Performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks to maintain streets, sanitary sewer systems, surface and subsurface storm drainage systems, street signs and surface markings, buildings, equipment, and landscaped areas;
•  Participates in the collection , tabulation and review of field data and other information such as routine traffic studies, condition surveys and inventories of public infrastructure;
•  Sewer TV inspection and flow monitoring;
•  Drives and operates equipment and vehicles such as dump trucks, street sweepers, mowers, excavators, road grader, and other equipment;
•  Removal of hazardous objects/materials;
•  Participates in special project assignments.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
•  Basic knowledge of the role of public works operations in the community;
•  Basic functions and purposes of general maintenance and construction work, or construction materials and processes to include the use of hand tools and equipment;
•  Basic laborer procedures and work activities;
•  Rotating successfully through the various program areas, projects, and activities in the division;
•  Learning about and safely operating vehicles and equipment;
•  Learning data gathering techniques and methods for entering and retrieving digital information;
•  Lifting/moving objects that could weigh a maximum of 80 pounds.

Physical Requirements:
Position frequently works in varying outdoor weather conditions and frequently works near moving mechanical equipment.  It requires the ability to lift objects that could weigh a maximum of 80 pounds. Employees with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.

Interview Process:
Top candidates will be invited to interview. As a part of our selection process, it will be necessary for candidates to provide the names and email addresses of up to five professional references (including two managers) that can provide information on work performance.  To avoid any delay in the process, we ask candidates to start gathering reference information now (name, email address, contact info and time period you worked together).  Additional information regarding reference checking will be emailed to candidates at a later date through the SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360 system.
